How a $2 trillion company has become the poster child for tax avoidance
Amazon receives billions of dollars in subsidies to “create jobs.” Meanwhile, they use these funds to buy more robots, invest in automation, and pay garbage wages. The company abuses federal subsidies to minimize the payroll expenses on the great paying jobs that it is getting government money to create. So when Amazon workers receive starvation wages and need government assistance to put food on the table, taxpayers are essentially splitting the difference between the salary they are receiving and what they need to sustain a lifestyle. Also, worth noting: the robots and automation that Amazon is investing in will eventually replace all factory workers within the next decade or two, so the government is helping fund a mass displacement of jobs. This is largely due to the fact that our government still claims trickledown economics is virtuous, and Amazon spends tens of millions of dollars on lobbying each year.
In many states, Amazon leads with the most employees who are reliant on government assistance, like Medicaid and food stamps. Meanwhile, Jeff Bezo’s net worth grew $50 billion during the pandemic, which is enough to distribute over $50,000 to every employee, including part time workers, and still remain richer than he was before COVID.
