Why We Have to Throw Away the Old Tradition of Not Talking about Politics to Save Our Country

We are told too often not to discuss religion, money, and politics, but do we continue this rule if it is at the expense of our Republic? Our country is falling apart and the fabric of our democracy is unravelling. Is it time to say enough with the niceties and start injecting this long-held taboo into our public discourse?

The spread of fake news is growing, and the portion of Americans who receive their news from social media has risen at a proliferating rate over the years. To make things worse, news networks are becoming so biased that the two political parties practically occupy different realities. Americans gloss over information and articles that might undermine their political beliefs, and only read news that enhances their biases and political ideology. They also seek out edgy headlines that make them feel outraged, and sadly both sides are guilty of this. Liberals hate conservatives, and conservatives hate liberals. But it’s worse: we love to hate one another, and news outlets are financially incentivized to report more biased news, which, in turn, continues to widen the divide.
