Over the years, Facebook has been linked to genocide, sex trafficking, terrorist recruitment, radicalization, and coup attempts. It also helped to fuel the rise of white supremacy; provided a platform for Flat Earthers; Holocaust and 9/11 Deniers; COVID misinformation; conspiracy theories about the 2020 election; and helped pave the way for Donald Trump’s presidency. Not to mention, it has exacerbated social alienation; collectively lowered the self esteem of millions; obliterated the true meaning of a “friend”; and accelerated the ongoing mental health epidemic, as more people around the world report experiencing body dysmorphia, depression, and anxiety.
Facebook has even been mentioned in one-third of divorces — this was 10 years ago, and one can only imagine the numbers are much higher. And just last October, whistleblower Frances Haugen revealed that the company has been completely aware of all this for years, since it conducts all own in-house research concerning the mental health effects it has on its users.
Now, Mark Zuckerberg wants to expand the Meta Platform further by allowing his users to become fully immersed in a virtual world, as if sitting on social media platform for a few hours a day hasn’t caused the world enough problems.
