What is the Liberal Media and Why do Conservatives Seem to Think They are Out to Get Them?
How the Republican party weaponized the news to discredit the other sides’ trustworthiness and desensitized their followers to their lies
One of the most frequently used terms by Republicans is the “liberal media.” It is also perhaps the most successful strategy for the GOP to discredit an entire news network, so their base will not believe any bad coverage coming from any media sources, besides right-leaning ones. In 2018, Donald Trump once told his supporters “what you’re seeing and what you’re reading is not what’s happening.” Many were quick to compare that to the quote from George Orwell’s 1984: “The party told you to reject the evidence of your eyes and ears. It was their final, most essential command.” We are living in Orwellian times, when Trump, who is widely considered the most documented liar in history, has become the main source of information for entire networks, like Fox, OAN, and Newsmax. As an American president, Trump has helped to legitimize and normalize the corruption, racism, and lies in political discourse and in certain media outlets.
